Between 1487 and 1701, 80 women and 5 men were executed as “witches” in Zurich. The tour shows how a trial proceeded, what image the population had of the “witch” and how she in turn was portrayed by artists of the period. We introduce you to Agatha Studler, the only female citizen of Zurich to be executed as a “witch”, and how her property (including a building in the old town) was seized by city authorities. And we explore why women in particular were often accused.
Guided tour in the old town of Zurich by Aline Suter and Frauenstadtrundgang Zürich.
Although Switzerland was not a colonial power, colonialism has left its mark on Zurich. Local residents were involved in or influenced by colonial structures in many different ways. This city tour on colonialism and racism points out places in Zurich where these entanglements become visible, from road and shop signs in the center to Villa Patumbah in the outskirts. We will focus on the societal and scientific aspects of colonialism - from how it affected every day live of people in Zurich to important contribution of well-known individuals that lay the basis for exploitation later on.
